    Since 2013, there have been 1500 reports of counterfeit drugs to WHO, especially from African, American, and European regions 1. Tackling the problem of poor drug quality, the Distributed Pharmaceutical Analysis Lab (DPAL) provides a quality analysis to quantify active pharmaceutical ingredient contents with a goal to trigger a report to the MRA or WHO2. With the support of DPAL, we would like to perform a series of chromatography experiments using the HPLC in order to identify and quantify the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) of Amoxicillin and Ciprofloxacin

    Lupus Flare: An Uncommon Presentation of Disseminated Gonorrhea

    Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the US with 700,000 annual cases. Although most cases of gonorrhea are localized, approximately 0.5–3% become disseminated. Here we discuss a rare case of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed septic shock from disseminated gonorrhea infection (DGI). Our patient is a 24-year-old woman with SLE, mixed connective tissue disease with cutaneous vasculitis, and lupus nephritis who presented with several weeks of malaise and generalized body aches associated with a diffuse rash along her fingers, palms, and trunk. Infectious workup was unrevealing with the exception of a positive gonorrhea test obtained from a cervical swab. Given her symptoms of tenosynovitis, the appearance of her skin lesions, and her positive gonorrhea test, she was diagnosed with septic shock secondary to DGI. With antibiotic treatment, the patient reported a dramatic improvement of the pain in her swollen joints and her rash receded. Patients diagnosed with SLE carry an increased risk of gonorrhea regardless of whether or not they are being treated for their SLE. Although it is well-documented that SLE is associated with severe DGI, few describe it resulting in overt septic shock

    FATTY ACID COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF CAMELLIA NINHII SEED OIL COLLECTED IN LAM DONG PROVINCE

    The seed oil of Camellia ninhii was studied for the first time on its fatty acid composition by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and antioxidant activity by the DPPH method. The results show that unsaturated fatty acids account for the largest amount, especially oleic acid with 45.43% of the total sample analyzed. In addition, other fatty acids, palmitic, linoleic, pentadecanoic, and two aromatic acids, benzoic and cinnamic, were present. The sample of C. ninhii seed oil exhibited mild antioxidant activity against DPPH free radicals with IC50 = 0.94 mg/mL

    An Initial Assessment Of A Logistics Company’s Potential As A High Performing Organization (HPO): A Case Study Of Saigonship Danang Joint Stock Company, Vietnam

    The rapid pace of change and development of the logistics industry in Vietnam has created both of opportunities and challenges for logistics companies. They are forced to define the key factors that set up high performance model to better withstand the pressures it is facing. This study determines the current conditions and abilities of Saigonship Danang Logistics Joint Stock Company (SSC) to become a high performing organization (HPO) with sustainable financial and non-financial results. The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of four key factors in term of strategic planning; employee competencies; management quality; and performance management as potential elements to become a high performance organization, and then provide recommended plan, based on the findings, for SSC to become a HPO. The findings of quantitative and qualitative data all of four factors, namely strategic planning, management quality, employee competencies and performance management have significant effects on the potential to be a HPO. Among all these four independent variables, strategic planning possessed the strongest effect on organizational performance. It could be concluded that Saigonship needs to have comprehensive development practices, build high-performing culture, and conduct right orientations for both managers and employees, enhance people programs and enabling infrastructure. Therefore, the proposed action plan is conducted in 3 levels – organizational, managerial and individual levels in terms of strategic planning, management quality, performance management, and employee competencies to get the high-performance results as a whole company

    Unveiling the dynamics of motivation, work-life balance, and work engagement among Vietnamese employees in multinational corporations

    This paper investigates the factors influencing work engagement among local Vietnamese staff in multinational corporations by focusing on the impacts of work motivation and work-life balance on work engagement. It explores the role of salary, bonuses, financial rewards, and career promotion in shaping employees’ motivation. A structured questionnaire was administered to 279 respondents working at Samsung Electronics Vietnam Co., Ltd. The collected data were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques and SmartPLS software. The findings reveal that career promotion opportunities significantly influence work motivation, surpassing salary, bonuses, and financial rewards. Work motivation and work-life balance positively affect work engagement, with work motivation exhibiting a more substantial impact. The study emphasizes the importance of clear career paths and growth opportunities in enhancing employee work motivation and engagement. It also underscores the need for organizations to create a supportive work environment, offer competitive compensation packages, and implement recognition programs. These findings have practical implications for multinational corporations operating in Vietnam, highlighting the significance of prioritizing employee career progression, promoting work-life balance, and fostering a motivating work environment

    International audienceA series of N-aryl and N-heteroaryl pyrazoles have been deproto-metallated using a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino-based mixed lithium-zinc combination. Mono-, di-, and tri-iodides have been obtained after subsequent trapping with iodine, depending on the substrate and on the quantity of base used. The results have been discussed in the light of the CH acidities of the substrates, determined both in the gas phase and in THF solution using the DFT B3LYP method

    Acute-on-chronic liver failure in cirrhosis

    The definition of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) remains contested. In Europe and North America, the term is generally applied according to the European Association for the Study of the Liver-Chronic Liver Failure (EASL-CLIF) Consortium guidelines, which defines this condition as a syndrome that develops in patients with cirrhosis and is characterized by acute decompensation, organ failure and high short-term mortality. One-third of patients who are hospitalized for acute decompensation present with ACLF at admission or develop the syndrome during hospitalization. ACLF frequently occurs in a closed temporal relationship to a precipitating event, such as bacterial infection or acute alcoholic, drug-induced or viral hepatitis. However, no precipitating event can be identified in approximately 40% of patients. The mechanisms of ACLF involve systemic inflammation due to infections, acute liver damage and, in cases without precipitating events, probably intestinal translocation of bacteria or bacterial products. ACLF is graded into three stages (ACLF grades 1-3) on the basis of the number of organ failures, with higher grades associated with increased mortality. Liver and renal failures are the most common organ failures, followed by coagulation, brain, circulatory and respiratory failure. The 28-day mortality rate associated with ACLF is 30%. Depending on the grade, ACLF can be reversed using standard therapy in only 16-51% of patients, leaving a considerable proportion of patients with ACLF that remains steady or progresses. Liver transplantation in selected patients with ACLF grade 2 and ACLF grade 3 increases the 6-month survival from 10% to 80%

    Some new spiro bicyclic compounds possessing one 1,2-dioxane ring and one γ-lactone ring were successfully synthesized by manganese(III)-based reaction of 1,1-diarylethenes and 2-acetylbutyrolactone under air. The procedure was simple and the product yield was high.   The NMR spectrometric features of the products were analyzed and the reaction mechanism is briefly discussed. Keywords.     Antioxidant and in vitro antidiabetic activities of Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth extract

    Peperomia pellucida (L.) is commonly used as a herbal plant. Its effectiveness in treating inflammatory diseases, digestive disorders, and cancer in tropical and subtropical countries was introduced, especially in field of folk medicine. However, this plant species has not been studied widely in Vietnam, especially for its biological activities. This study was done to determine the antioxidant capacity of P. pellucida by using in vitro and in vivo methods, as well as its inhibitory ability to α-amylase enzyme activity. The total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents of P. pellucida extract were reported to be 359.91±0.77 mg GAE/g and 200.28±1.23 mg QE/g extract, respectively. The results showed the in vitro antioxidant activity of P. pellucida extract in four methods, including DPPH, and ABTS.+, RP and TAC, had EC50 values of 730.34 μg/mL, 84.33 μg/mL, 95.28 μg/mL, respectively, and Abs0.5 value of 114.73 μg/mL. Under H2O2-induced oxidative stress, fruit flies that were raised in the feed medium supplemented with a concentration of 1 mg/mL of P. pellucida extract showed their average survival time, 50% survival time, and 10% survival time at 1.6 times, 1.8 times, and 1.62 times, respectively, higher than those of the control treatment. The ability to inhibit the α-amylase activity in P. pellucida extract was determined with an EC50 value of 115.32±2.65 μg/mL compared with the commercial drug of 18.67±0, 01 μg/mL. The research results showed that P. pellucida is a potential species in the study of natural compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic activities
